Museum of Old and New Art

MONA, as it is more commonly known, is the jewel in Tasmania’s contemporary art crown. The gallery is testament to the thriving cultural scene and demands attention from the international art community. David Walsh, the billionaire benefactor of the gallery, has described his wish for MONA to be a ‘subversive adult Disneyland’. The gallery hosts live performances and festivals year-round so there is always something exciting going on.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is home to some of the best local art around. It is Australia’s second oldest museum and inside the precinct is Tasmania’s oldest surviving public building, the Commissariat Store (constructed in 1808). TMAG is home to fine arts, contemporary installations, Aboriginal artworks and much more.

Plimsoll Gallery

Located at the University of Tasmania, on Hobart’s historic waterfront, Plimsoll is dedicated to innovative visual art and design. Showcasing up and coming local and international artists, the not-for-profit gallery is a short walk from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Salamanca Place..

Salamanca Arts Centre 

In the heart of Salamanca Place, Tasmania’s premier art and dining precinct, Salamanca Arts Centre is housed in some of the precinct’s beautiful historic sandstone warehouses. It has a number of galleries and exhibition spaces, along with artist studios, shops, and arts organisations. 

Salamanca Market

Salamanca Market showcases the enormous creativity of Tasmanian artists and craftspeople. An easy walk from designer digs at the Vibe Hotel Hobart, the market takes over Salamanca Place every Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm. It’s the perfect place to purchase a unique gift or memento of your island stay.
