Marysville, the picturesque town in the Yarra Valley, only 90 minutes out of Melbourne is a place to relax, recharge and explore some of Australia's beautiful natural wonders. Here are the top things to do while you're in town.
Steavenson Falls
Surrounded by tree ferns and tall Mountain Ash, Steavenson Falls are one of Victoria’s tallest waterfalls, plummeting a staggering 84 metres. Open to the public year-round, this magical waterfall is just as impressive to visit at night as it is during the day thanks to the floodlights which stay on until 11pm. You can visit the falls via a 45-minute walk along the scenic Tree Fern Gully trail or make the short drive to the carpark, which is an easy 700 metre stroll from the base of the waterfall.
Bruno’s Sculpture Garden
Named by Experience Oz as one of Victoria’s 100 things to do before you die, this spectacular garden is an enchanting mix of lush greenery and delightful sculptures. Bruno has worked tirelessly to bring the garden back to its former glory, after it was destroyed in the devastating fires of 2009. Meander through the thoughtfully planted landscape and marvel at his work, discovering sculptures of people, animals and mythical creatures hiding in trees and popping out beneath ferns.
Lake Mountain
Lake Mountain is a year-round adventure playground offering cross-country skiing, tobogganing, snow shoeing and snow play in winter, and wildflower trails, bush walks, mountain biking, a spectacular 240-metre flying fox, and laser skirmish during the warmer months. Visit the summit on a clear day for a peaceful retreat with amazing views of Melbourne.
Walking Trails, Hikes & Waterfalls
The Marysville region is home to beautiful nature walks, challenging hikes, and spectacular waterfalls. The trails, mostly nestled in a cool temperate rainforest and featuring interpretive boards and boardwalks, are perfect for spotting birds and local wildlife.
Discover the trails with the help of the Visit Marysville app or pop into the Tourist Information Centre for a map and some local advice. We recommend tackling the steep terrain of the Cathedral Ranges for a spectacular view of the Acheron Valley or, if you’re after something a little less challenging, opt for a stroll along Little River, the perfect spot for a picnic lunch.
Trout Fishing
Marysville’s pristine rivers offer great fishing spots for keen anglers of all levels. Gallipoli Park Lake is stocked twice yearly with trout and redfin, providing plenty of opportunity to catch your next meal. Why not make a day of it and BBQ your catch at the park’s shelter?
Beginners can try fishing at Marysville’s or Buxton’s Trout and Salmon Ponds where a catch is guaranteed. The team can skin and fillet your fish too; all you have to do is cook. As an added bonus, early risers might be lucky enough to spot a platypus – one of the most intriguing of Australia’s marsupials.
Marysville is a great day trip out from Melbourne.
