Spring is celebrated in all sorts of ways around the world, from the colour-soaked revelry at India’s Holi festival to the protein-fuelled Festival of Scrambled Eggs in the Bosnian town of Zenica. Australia’s national capital comes alive in spring with Floriade, a vibrant display of more than one million blooms.
The month-long celebration of spring sees Canberra’s Commonwealth Park transformed into a riot of colour, with themed plantings and hundreds of garden gnomes, market stalls, workshops and food venues.
This year the festival runs from 17 September to 16 October and takes the theme “Sounds of Spring”, giving visitors the opportunity to view the blooms against musical soundtracks.
An exciting program of activities, workshops, talks and entertainment means that on any given day you’ll be able to learn new tricks for the garden, take part in yoga beside the blooms, paint your own gnome, or learn (and eat!). Visitors with little ones in tow will be pleased to discover a range of kid-friendly activities.
From 29 September to 2 October, explore Floriade’s dark side at NightFest, when from 6.30pm to 10.30pm the park will be bursting with beautiful light installations, food, wine, comedy and roving performers.
Your four-legged friends can enjoy frolicking in the park on Dogs’ Day Out, the final day of Floriade, 16 October, when visitors are welcome to bring their pooches.
