International guests wax lyrical about Australia in the summer months, but the locals know that winter getaways are where we shine bright. So, here are our top 3 winter getaways for holiday-starved Aussies.
Sunseekers, Have We Got a Holiday for You
In Australia’s sunniest state capital, Perth, it’s winter when you’re not having a winter. The city’s warm temperatures and sub-tropical climate make it the perfect spot to soak up the sunshine, with beautiful beaches, bushwalks and wineries all within easy reach.
Bureau of Meteorology data lists Perth as having an average of eight hours of sun per day year-round, and that means plenty of opportunity to enjoy the city’s relaxed alfresco lifestyle and must-see attractions. Many of the city’s entertainment venues and landmarks are within minutes of the Adina Apartment Hotel Perth, including RAC Arena with its exciting line-up of top sporting matches and world-class musicians.
Also nearby is Elizabeth Quay, a vibrant precinct with a public art trail that includes the Edge, illuminating the entire length of the inlet with a spectacular night-time show. Visitors are welcomed by Laurel Nannup’s giant bird sculpture, inspired by the Noongar people’s first visions of European settlers, whose distant sailing ships looking like floating birds.
The nearby ferry terminal provides easy access to Rottnest Island, where you’ll truly appreciate the winter sunshine. Go for a stroll in Kings Park, one of Australia’s most beautiful parks with its sweeping city and Swan River views.
From August 24 till September 3, Perth welcomes the Winter Lights festival, a neon wonderland of Carnivale-themed projections, roving performers and interactive installations. Held in and around Brookfield Place, just 5 minutes’ walk from Adina Apartment Hotel Perth, this spectacular show of colour and light is back bigger and brighter than ever, with new features like live music nightly, twilight artisan markets, and festival-themed cocktails.
In beachside Scarborough, the temperature turns up a notch with Jazz By The Beach, held across 10 local venues on the weekend of August 27-28. Check into the Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough and enjoy a New Orleans vibe at one of the many free and ticketed events.
Surry With A Wintery Fringe On Top
Not quite as balmy as Perth but still a great place to be in winter by world standards, Sydney has countless museums, cafés and traditional pubs that offer a cosy retreat when the days get chilly. Some, like the Lord Dudley, even have fireplaces.
The pub is a short drive from the Adina Apartment Hotel Sydney Surry Hills, which is well-positioned to take advantage of a great array of bars and restaurants. The cooler weather and mostly clear skies make hiking in Sydney in winter a pleasure. Check out some of the coastal walks like the Bondi to Bronte walk and perhaps stop at some of the beautiful beaches along the way for more winter sunshine.
Prepare for some electrifying entertainment with blockbuster musicals like 10-time Tony Award-winner, Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Capitol Theatre until November 20, and Cinderella The Musical at the Lyric Theatre from October 23 to December 23.
Mulled Wine and Other Winter Warmers in Melbourne
Melbourne may be less blessed weather-wise but when winter arrives, the city over-compensates with food festivals, art shows and cosy pubs and bars and Quincy Melbourne put you in the thick of the action. Mulled wine or steaming hot cider are great for warding off winter chills, and there’s nothing better than a hot chocolate from Ganache or Koko Black.
The Queen Victoria Winter Night Market is back after a three-year hibernation, tantalizing visitors with warming curries and cheesy pasta, fondue, desserts and hot cider until August 31. Top that off with live music, roving entertainment and fire pits, and even Melbourne is looking good for a winter staycation.
