2 AUGUST 2016 Hotel Kurrajong Canberra opens the new Chifley’s Whisky Bar next month to celebrate 90 years since the hotel first opened its doors, themed in honour of the favourite drink of Australia’s 16th Prime Minister, who called the Hotel Kurrajong home for 11 years.
The hotel consulted a whisky expert from Melbourne to curate the new menu of special blend whiskies from around the world, a signature cocktail called Benny’s Double and a whisky-themed dinner menu, which can be enjoyed for a limited time to mark the 90th celebrations.
The new whisky collection will take guests on a sensory journey through decades gone by and includes Johnny Walker’s Celebration Whisky, Gold Label Reserve. The new three course dinner menu features three dishes flavoured with whisky as well as matching whisky selections.
TFE Hotels CEO Rachel Argaman said the recent national election gave good reason to celebrate the hotel’s proud history of hosting Australia’s parliamentarians, many of whom called it home while the Capital was moved from Melbourne to Canberra and Old Parliament House was being built, in 1926.
“We greatly respect the association the hotel has with some of Australia’s most noted leaders, including Ben Chifley, whose former suite has been restored and is available for guest bookings,” Ms Argaman said. “As we celebrate the hotel’s 90th birthday this year we recognise Chifley as part of this important milestone. We invite all Australians to celebrate our nation’s foundations by enjoying The Benny’s Double cocktail in Ben Chifley’s Whisky Bar and the whisky menu at Chifley’s Bar & Grill.”
Chifley’s Whisky Dinner
A three course whisky-flavoured menu for $70 per person or $90 per person including matching whiskies, available until 31 August 2016. For details visit https://www.hotelkurrajong.com.au/whatson/
Benny’s Double
An easy drinking cocktail that former Prime Minister Ben Chifley would have approved of, Benny’s Double, contains Johnny Walker’s celebration whisky, Gold Label Reserve, with Luxardo maraschino liqueur, orange bitters and 23 carat gold leaf.
The original recipe for JW Gold was originally created in the early 1920s by Alex Walker the second, who designed the blend that would celebrate the Johnny Walker centenary. However due to shortages of malts after World War I he was unable to create the blend. Alex’s original notes were later found and he was eventually able to create this exquisite whisky.
ABOUT HOTEL KURRAJONG
Hotel Kurrajong Canberra first opened in December 1926 and has since been the origin of many stories of Australia’s political leaders and those who moved in their circles. The Heritage-listed hotel was reopened in 2014 after a major renovation and restoration project as part of a joint venture between the National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) and TFE Hotels, who operate it today.
Visitors to the hotel will be struck by the 1920’s-inspired decor and hospitality from the moment they arrive. The grand ballroom, the cosy fireplace, the library stocked with historic literature and photographs along the hallways imbue a sense of the building’s history.
The pavilion-style buildings with their pretty terrace gardens, dotted with warming fire pits and garden furniture for outdoor drinks, are nestled among trees between Lake Burley Griffin and Capital Hill, having lived various incarnations as a boarding house and hotel school since first opening as a hotel in 1926, then called Hostel Number 2.
The hotel’s 147 rooms houses 26 in the heritage wing and include four executive suites, four balcony rooms and eight terrace rooms.
Chifley’s Bar & Grill, named after the former resident Prime Minister, pays homage to the past, with inspiration from today. The team under newly appointed head chef Saju Rajappan, delivers a unique experience for diners in a classically elegant dining room, which extends to a glassed-in terrace overlooking the gardens. The menu features locally sourced seasonal produce, adopting a paddock to plate philosophy.
